Weddings

Becca and Hayes’ wedding this past weekend was one of my favorite weddings of all time. I am so excited to share highlights on the blog today!

The Couple

How we met… We met shortly after midnight, on a field in the middle of Grinnell College’s campus, where we were both freshmen in 2011. It was the school’s biggest party of the year and the culminating moment was a campus-wide shot at 12:00 AM with the bulk of the student body of 1,600. Among the throng, we bumped into each other.

Our love story… We were close friends in college and had a brief romance, but our love story really begins in 2017, with a lot of choreographed cross-country trips and tearful goodbyes at airports. We dated from Oregon to D.C. and then from Iowa to D.C., before moving in together in Louisville, Kentucky in December 2019. Living together cemented our relationship and by 2021, we both knew we wanted to eventually get married. We were content to wait a bit, though.

Proposal… In July 2023, Hayes formed a proposal plan with Becca’s close friend, Aiyanna. On a weekend trip to Becca’s hometown of New York City — a trip that Becca thought she had carefully planned herself — Hayes surprised her with a proposal in a favorite spot, Riverside Park. Their trip to the city had ostensibly been to attend a New York Yankees game that afternoon with Aiyanna. After saying, “Yes!” through tears, Becca said, “Wait, so are we going to a Yankees game?” We were not. That had been a misdirection. Instead, we ate lunch with Becca’s family and Hayes’s brother, who had flown in for the occasion. That evening, we celebrated with a group of about 30 friends at a bar in Brooklyn.

The Wedding

When Hayes and Becca first messaged me about their unique wedding plans, I knew it was going to be a fun and unique day, but I had no way to prepare myself for just how special it would be. Hayes and Becca planned to be married on the roof deck of their home, followed by a boat ride around the harbor with their friends, ending at Ampersea for a reception with 150+ guests! It sounded like it would be a blast… and it exceeded every possible expectation I had.

Everything about this day was special and intentional. From completing the NY Times Crossword puzzle with her dad (I believe they said they have a 1700+ day streak!), to their heartfelt vows on the rooftop of their own home, to their neighbors (who they’d never met!) surprise drone photos of their ceremony – dropped off on a flash drive immediately after the ceremony, to the water taxi ride around the harbor with their friends… I could go on and on. This day was absolutely perfect, and a true joy to be a part of and capture.

This post is way longer than normal and it still only just scratches the surface of what made this day so special. Here are just some of my favorites from Becca and Hayes’ wedding day.
