2012 Flashback

December 31, 2012 2012 Flashback

2012 was truly an incredible year and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on all of the awesomeness (I realize that I overuse this word, let’s just roll with it) that ensued. I want to start by thanking all of the amazing people that made this year such a success for my business and helped to set up 2013 to be even better. Without all of your love and support I wouldn’t be going into 2013 with over a dozen weddings already on the books with couples who make my heart soar. It brings a smile to my face as I look forward to the day that they commit to the one they love in front of all of their friend and family, as I am capturing those moments so they can look back and cherish them forever.

Looking back on this year, I think of the families who called on me to capture the first days in the precious life of their new baby and how these photos will be treasured for years to come. I think of the families who used the photographs from their session not only to adorn the walls in their home but also to send out to their friends and family during the holidays. I think of the couples who have already gotten married and have started their new lives together, and those who have celebrated their engagements and are embarking on a new journey towards happily ever after.

There are few jobs in the world where you are surrounded by such happiness and joy and not only form professional relationships but also friendships. I am happy to say that this year has been a wonderful year and I’ve loved getting to know each and every one of you and I look forward to continuing to watch your families grow for many years to come.

2012 started with an engagement session of two people very near and dear to my heart. Initially their wedding had been penciled in for May 2013, but as they realized the big wedding thing was just not “them” plans changed. This year we watched Dom and Sarah get engaged, get married, trash the dress, and rounded off the year with a beautiful family session featuring Dom’s stepson and Sarah’s darling son Buddah. The rest of their images from this year are snuck in throughout this post.

There were so many lovely couples who did engagement sessions in 2012 to capture the excitement in the fleeting time between saying “yes” and saying “I do.”

One of my favorite things this year was getting to meet Baby Maura and Baby Meia when they were only a few days new. Photographing newborns is best described as challenging but rewarding. After seeing these photos my mom and dad asked if I could travel back in time and take newborn photos of myself. Ha! If only that were possible. Although there is no going back for me, I can definitely ensure to freeze this sliver of time for new mommies and daddies.

I also photographed my first high school senior, the beautiful Alexandra Posner! Not only is this girl drop dead gorgeous, but she’s smart too! I swear every other day she posts another acceptance letter and scholarship to her Facebook! YOU GO GIRL!

If anyone knows of any high school or college seniors graduating soon who want classy images to capture who they really are rather than the stuffy boring school photos, please send them my way!

Of course I have to talk about the wonderful weddings of this year. The award for best war story goes to Andrea and Chad, as Andrea got stung by a bee in the foot while we were doing their bridal portraits. Thankfully she’s not allergic! That is the perfect example of just how laid back and awesome this couple is. They were truly a joy to work with and their wedding was so much fun! I really felt more like a friend and guest than a vendor at their wedding.

Dom and Sarah‘s wedding wins the award for the hottest. Holy cow, that was very likely the hottest day of the year, with us outdoors on a late June day with the temperature at 104°, not including heat index. This particular fact had a lot to do with their decision to have a trash the dress session. It was SO hot on their wedding day that we didn’t get as many of the bridal portraits that we had wanted (and they were soaked with sweat anyway… who am I kidding, so was I!) so we got the opportunity to try again a little later on.
Taylor and Nick won the WPOC dream wedding and got married in September. Their wedding was on a hot day too, but you’d never know it by how well these two kept their cool. They win the award for the most emotional wedding. There was just so much love and emotion that they even got me choked up while going through the images the next day. We had a groom who cried at the sight of his beautiful bride, and her laughing at his reaction. Her tears while he read his vows, and a dance as they walked back down the aisle as husband and wife.
Josh and Chelsea got married on a cold October day surrounded by hundreds of supportive and loving friends and family members. Their bridal party alone had more than 5 times the people than Steve and I even had attend our wedding. Their wedding wins the award for the greatest surprises, including a plane with a message to the bride and groom, and hope lanterns to end the night! These were not only a surprise to the bride and groom but also a surprise to me, which just made it even more fun!
Dom and Sarah’s trash the dress session was fun fun fun for me! This was my first time shooting one of these (though I did “trash” my own dress – which you can read about here) so it was an opportunity to really just exercise my creativity. We all had a blast! These photos were also my first ever to be featured as a part of an online wedding publication!

Among all of the other things, 2012 was a year filled with beautiful and happy families from Maryland, DC, Virginia and even New York City!

Finally to wrap up this post, a few of my favorite faces. Our best friends Josh and Jamie and their adorable son, a kid that brings so much joy to my life, my “nephew” Ethan.

This year has been so incredible both for my business and in my personal life, and I thank you all for sharing in it with me! I can’t wait to see what 2013 will bring!
